(Undated) -- What do rocker Gene Simmons, actress Betty White, and screaming chickens have in common? All of the above were featured in ads during Super Bowl 44. Simmons pitched for Doctor Pepper Cherry, while White appeared in an ad for Snickers, and the chickens were the sight gag in ads for the fast-casual dining chain, Dennys. Humor also had a starring role during Sunday's "super" ads, with heavy rotations for Budweiser and the snack food Doritos. Bud's ads ranged from survivors on a "Lost"-like desert island foregoing rescue to drink down some cool ones. Doritos unveiled spots with an emphasis on visual humor, all of which were conceived by fans in a sweepstakes and Internet-based viral campaign leading up to the Big Game.
While beer, laughs, snacks, and celebrities are nothing new to "Super" ads, there were some changes in 2010. In the post-bailout era, some major auto makers like GM and Ford were noticeably absent. The void paved the way for Jeff Bridges-voiceovers touting the affordable Hyundai Sonata and a Volkswagen spot with appearances from actor Tracy Morgan and music legend Stevie Wonder.
CBS -- which aired Sunday's match up between the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts -- also ran a few "house" ads. In one memorable spot promoting "The Late Show With David Letterman," Oprah Winfrey is seen watching the big game on the couch in between Letterman and Jay Leno.
